Evan Hansen is a socially anxious, isolated teenager who struggles to fit in. As a coping mechanism, his therapist asks him to write encouraging letters to himself. One of these letters is found in the pocket of Connor Murphy, a troubled classmate who dies by suicide.
Mistaking the letter for a suicide note, Connor’s grieving parents believe Evan was his only friend. Caught off guard, Evan lies to comfort them, which snowballs into a massive, fabricated backstory about their secret, profound friendship. As his fake emails and stories go viral, Evan finally achieves the popularity and belonging he always wanted, while his web of lies threatens to destroy the very people he aimed to help.
