Auditioning In Musical Theatre Workshop Q&A

Are you ready to take your musical theatre dreams to the next level? Discover the secrets to landing that coveted role with our Auditioning in Musical Theatre workshop, led by two industry pros: Matt Nesmith and Chris Larson, from the renowned BFA Musical Theatre program at the University of South Dakota. Matt and Chris bring their wealth of experience to the stage, helping you select and prepare the perfect audition material. Speaking of auditions, Matt is stage directing and music directing our upcoming production of Oklahoma! so workshop participants will get direct insight on what the directors are looking for in their January auditions. Check out what they had to say about their upcoming workshop below!

Q1: What is the primary objective of the Auditioning in Musical Theatre workshop?
A1: To learn the professional way to audition for a musical. This gives you confidence and eases the stress of auditioning which, of course is good for the auditioner, but also makes it a more comfortable experience for the pianist and director(s).

Q2: Who can benefit from attending the Auditioning in Musical Theatre workshop?
A2: Anyone who has any doubts or questions about auditioning, or anyone who would like a refresher on auditioning. Times keep changing and so do expectations for auditions.

Q3: How long does the Auditioning in Musical Theatre workshop last?
A3: The workshop will take place from 10am-3pm, with a lunch break at 12pm. We will provide 10-15 minutes at the end of the workshop for any additional questions and wrap up from our session.

Q4: Do I need to prepare anything before attending this workshop?
A4: If you are registered as an observing participant, come with an open mind and energy to engage in group activities and support your peers. If you are registered as an active participant, please prepare one 30 bar cut (about 1 minute) of a musical theater song. If you are looking to audition for TPP’s Oklahoma! or Hair productions, this would be a great opportunity to bring your audition package to get direct feedback from the director, Matt. You can either provide sheet music for your audition or come with a karaoke track as backing for your piece. We will not accept a capella auditions for this workshop.

Q5: Is there a performance or presentation at the end of the workshop?
A5: There will be no full performance for this workshop but if you register as an active participant, you will get the opportunity to perform your cut for the group and receive feedback and notes from our teachers on how you can specify, adjust or improve your audition. So there is a performance aspect if you are looking to mock trial your audition.

Say goodbye to the audition jitters as you step into the spotlight with confidence! Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to refine your craft, network with fellow performers, and gain the skills you need to shine on any stage. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just starting out, this workshop will elevate your musical theatre game.
